Sarah Palin's controversial nominee for state attorney general, Wayne Anthony Ross, was rejected Thursday in a 35-23 vote by the Republican-controlled Alaska State Legislature. This is the first time in Alaska history that an attorney general appointee has been turned down. There was a week of damaging confirmation hearings that revealed a string of past controversial comments. Two that Yahoo! news shared were the appointee's past defense of a Ku Klux Klan statue and a 1991 quote that said: "If a guy can’t rape his wife, ... who’s he gonna rape?"
Governor Palin didn't hang around to see the turn down and was criticized by Legislators from both sides of the aisle. Palin flew the coop to give a speech in Indiana even with stimulus money, the budget, critical bills, legislation Palin was pushing, as well as the confirmation vote on her appointee Ross were on the table this week. Guess that 2012 looks tempting enough to her to fly out and give a brief talk in Indiana rather than tend to business in her home state.
Let's take a brief look at some of his other "colorful" positions:
- Ross refuses to disavow past use of the term "degenerates" in referring to homosexuals.
- Believes that the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision on abortion rights, Roe vs. Wade, should be overturned. (And I thought an Attorney General worked with the laws currently in place.)
- Criticized by Alaska Native Federation as an opponent of giving rural Alaskans a priority for subsistence hunting and fishing. To be somewhat fair, subsistence hunting and fishing rights debates have raged in Alaska for decades.
- Women's advocacy groups said NO to his appointment.
- Child protective agencies said NO to his appointment.
- Alaskans who DON'T want to secede from the Union said NO to his appointment.
- Citizens for First Amendment Rights said NO to his appointment.
Don't Take My Word for It:
